oh wait, i was wrong about lapis never accomplishing anything at all, she played baseball once! wow! except the whole thing was a ruse to keep the rubies from searching the barn, where peridot was hiding, and it turned out they weren't looking for peridot in the first place and she was never in danger at all. still not a plot point that would've turned out substantially different without lapis. still a dull and useless character. still convinced peridot would've remained far more interesting if she hadn't been shoved into the barn with lapis. what a waste.

"the gems clearly identify as female!"

oh, i must just have missed all these instances of gems stating that they are women, then

"they use feminine pronouns for themselves!"

funny, i wasn't aware that english made a gender distinction in the first person singular

people trying to make a big deal out of how only a diamond can scratch another diamond... not only does that have nothing to do with what it would take to shatter a diamond, but you know what's a very easy way to destroy any diamond? burn it. it's just carbon. and gem drill implied that gems are literally made of the material they're named for...

i wonder though, what's up with the way the gems' actual gemstones physically increase in size when they fuse... i mean, when you look at a fusion like sardonyx or alexandrite, their gems are very obviously larger than they are on their component gems. how does that work?

i propose that the whole series would be better if lapis didn't exist. what did she ever accomplish? she warned the crystal gems that homeworld was going to return... except her warning made zero difference in the end, the return/jailbreak would likely still have played out more or less the same, since the crystal gems' attempts to prepare turned out to be useless and she had nothing to do with their eventual escape. she fused with jasper and kept her trapped under the ocean for like half a year... but she actually just created more of a threat in doing so, if jasper had attempted to fight the crystal gems on her own she probably would've been poofed and bubbled by the end of jailbreak, considering that just garnet on her own put up a pretty good fight. lapis' return to homeworld indirectly prompted the whole mission in the first place, and therefore lead to peridot getting trapped on earth, being captured by the crystal gems, giving them information on the cluster and ultimately the cluster being neutralised by means of bubbling itself... but it would very possibly still have taken place if lapis hadn't been involved, since its primary objective was to check on the cluster, which was already present either way. in short: useless, dull, no influence on the plot, no character development. what's the fucking point of her?

EDIT: i forgot that the red eyes was sent by peridot, all the way back in episode 2, so yeah, she pretty definitely still would've come to earth if lapis didn't exist. conclusion: she shouldn't.

so i really wonder what's up with gem designations. peridot referred to herself as "facet 2F5L, cut 5XG" in message received, but saw no need to specify what planet she was made on... and we can assume that the "facet" part alone doesn't specify that because crystal gem amethyst's designation was given as "facet 5, cut 8XM" in that will be all and peridot stated in beta that "facet 5" refers to the prime kindergarten. it doesn't sound like a designation that would be given to a single place on a single planet and not reused on other planets! if they'd just started with a "facet 1" on homeworld at some point and counted up from there across all gem-colonised planets, you'd expect them to have reached much higher numbers by the time earth came into play. and then in i am my mom aquamarine refers to peridot as simply "peridot 5XG", omitting the facet as well, as though there couldn't possibly be any other peridot cut 5XG... is it possible that certain kinds of gem can only be made on specific planets? does the loss of earth mean it's now outright impossible for homeworld to make any more amethysts, or rose quartzes, or jaspers, or carnelians? if so, that sure sounds like a sustainability problem...

(though holly blue agate did specifically state that the gems stationed at the human zoo were from earth. hmm.)

why'd they even bother with these episodes where peridot came to know and better understand the crystal gems if they were going to follow it up by shoving her into the barn with shitty dull lapis and ruining everything interesting about her all along

so you know how at one point there was a tweet of a crew member laughing at the concept of a diamond getting poofed... what if all the things we think we know about the way gems work don't actually fully apply to the diamonds, what if it turns out that they can't get poofed because their bodies aren't light projections, or some similar twist...

come on, if you're just going to portray peridot as comic relief and/or ship fodder all the time, don't bother showing her at all. it does her character such a fucking disservice. she'd developed so much from catch and release to ca. gem drill, and grown to be able care about things for their own sake and to be able to stand up for them even when she was scared to hell, and then we got fucking barn mates and it all came tumbling down. nevermind the way we just went straight from lapis grudgingly acknowledging that maybe peridot genuinely was sorry at the end of barn mates, to them being best buddies in beta, and how it makes zero narrative sense.

(i remember when people assumed barn mates was going to be a peridot and garnet episode simply because we were expecting one of these to continue the theme after back to the barn and too far and it was the one leaked episode title that seemed to fit the bill. if only it had been. if only there had been any peridot and garnet interaction after log date 7 15 2. why didn't people end up shipping them? they actually have a cute and interesting dynamic that also has the advantage of not having come out of fucking nowhere. seriously, their relationship, however you choose to view it, was developed more in one episode than the big popular peridot ships were since their respective beginnings. i guess the way i personally feel about relationships and what they should be built on shows in that. like, rebecca sugar has been quoted as calling the way ruby and sapphire first fused "an outrageously romantic gesture", and i'm left going "?? ???? ???", because how the hell can a situation between two people who barely even know each other be any kind of romantic...)

this is the most hilarious bit of mindless fearmongering i've ever heard. yes that's exactly right, the show will suddenly end right in the middle of the season because of the implications of a presidency that hasn't even begun yet (and is actually still slightly less than 100% certain). and what's more, the crewniverse are able to see into the future! since, you know, they apparently already knew how the election would turn out as long as a year ago, when this episode would've been produced, and went "welp it's been fun" and stopped working on new episodes there and then!

my wish: for steven universe to end without ever confirming any new couples. the shitfits would be epic. would serve these "omg these two characters interacted in a non-negative manner, there's basically no way they'll not become canon now" weirdos right.

SJWtards freaking out about how ~*problematic*~ it is for an episode to suggest that people with shitty views can change if you just make an effort to interact with them like human beings? and also that there's usually reasons why hateful and bitter people ended up spiteful and bitter in the first place, and didn't simply decide to be that way one day because they're inherently bad people (and hence not worth bothering with at all)? yeah, pretty much what i would've expected.

man, if episodes like this are what it takes for entitled idiots to declare that they hate the show and leave the fandom because they feel ~*unsafe*~, please give us more of them.

peridot and lapis making fun of their own character arcs was pure gold though.

i'm really liking this whole "drawing directly on the screen" thing. i've tried to draw with conventional graphics tablets, i can't, i just never got the hang of coordinating what's on the screen with what my hand is doing. they made colouring much easier, but that was about it. this is like pencil and paper! you know, if it was magical paper that didn't turn into a fuzzy mess that distorts everything after too much erasing, and you could draw almost infinitely fine details, and you could just mirror the image and keep drawing that way for a bit and then mirror it back, and grab bits of it and scale and rotate them independently of the rest...

pose referenced from a screencap from message received.

let's see whether i also feel like coloring it.

yeah sure, pretend that peridot is your favourite character when you're the kind of person whose idiology would've kept them from giving her even a single chance to change. pretend that you wouldn't have treated her as irredeemable trash if she was a real person, that you wouldn't do exactly that if you did meet someone in that kind of situation. i guess the fact that you can now stick her into supposedly cute supposedly gay ships magically negates all that though, amirite.

what a disgusting fandom.

steven universe fandom: now at the stage of delusion where they think it makes sense to claim that something drawn by the creator of the show contradicts canon

(found people freaking out about those little doodles of garnet with greg and opal with greg that have been around for like forever. look, if rebecca sugar herself thinks that kind of thing is cute and acceptable to draw, it makes zero sense to claim that that it contradicts what the characters are intended to be. because, you know, she's the one who created them.)

(fun fact: the number of characters with confirmed sexual orientations is now one, the number of gems with confirmed sexual orientations is still zero)

steven universe fandom: *whines about how you're not allowed to change characters' canonical appearances when someone draws a skinnier rose quartz*
steven universe fandom: *cheerfully draws garnet, sardonyx and smoky quartz - all still as gems, not human versions - with skintones that are clearly means to recall black and brown humans, when those characters are actually magenta, a sort of cool brick red and muted purple, respectively*

i see how it is
