so, how about that circular gallifreyan-inspired writing system i invented because i didn't feel like learning about op-amps. what if i played with it some more? what if i first developed a way to somewhat easily draw it on the computer (can't really call it writing yet) and then modified it? i think i've probably already made enough changes that you can't completely decipher it using the original notes...

i'd really love to make a font of it eventually, but haha, that would be such a mess of combining symbols. probably possible, but worth it?

i'm honestly really proud of the whole thing. it's not very practical, but definitely aesthetically pleasing, and also actually has interesting mechanics and isn't just a shitty cipher for the english alphabet

i'm really liking this whole "drawing directly on the screen" thing. i've tried to draw with conventional graphics tablets, i can't, i just never got the hang of coordinating what's on the screen with what my hand is doing. they made colouring much easier, but that was about it. this is like pencil and paper! you know, if it was magical paper that didn't turn into a fuzzy mess that distorts everything after too much erasing, and you could draw almost infinitely fine details, and you could just mirror the image and keep drawing that way for a bit and then mirror it back, and grab bits of it and scale and rotate them independently of the rest...

pose referenced from a screencap from message received.

let's see whether i also feel like coloring it.

i wasn't going to colour this one, but then i did. possibly because i'd already invested so much time in digitally fixing the proportions of the sketch. i was never very good at drawing backgrounds though, so i'd rather leave it like this than halfass something

crystal gem peridot looking pretty damn pleased with herself.

i'm paying attention to everything but electronics these days. i just have so few fucks left.

do i still know how to colour? did i ever really? i don't know, man.

transistors are annoying, therefore op-amps are annoying, therefore the ne555 timer is really, really annoying. let's doodle peridot on the worksheet instead.

(i envy the logic that lead someone to decide to call a chip that contains two ne555 ne556 and one that contains four ne555 ne558, though.)

(i'm also kind of fascinated by the way i almost perfectly proportioned her to be about six heads tall even though i didn't start with a stick figure or anything like that!)

so i went looking for a program similar to facegen except for entire bodies, and makehuman is pretty cool. the one option i was the most interested in - generating random bodies - has actually been removed in the most recent release, but it's supposed to return in the next one, and it's still a great program without that. would recommend.

the one positive thing about having started out drawing "anime style" is that basically any move away from that feels like an improvement

man the way i draw faces is still too soft and lacking in definition somehow. too many smooth lines. time to go look at drawing the head and hands.

okay, looking at it now. i wonder how many people would mindlessly cry sexism because the section on male heads is larger than the one on female heads. nevermind that it's because a lot of the basics that apply to all heads are covered in the former. you could argue that it's structured somewhat poorly, that it would make more sense to cover the basics in one chapter and then do one that specifies details for men and another for women, but sexist? as if the way people throw that word around even means anything anymore.

that point when you've been fiddling with a drawing for so long that the paper is totally deformed from the pressure of the pencil strokes you've erased and it's not actually possible to get lines to turn out the precise way you want them to anymore, augh

also man, it's difficult to draw detailed lips on male faces and still have them look male.

seriously though, i've got to actually purposely draw aradia, i mean look at the hilarious faces she makes. she thinks she mostly wants to see what happens when this whole place falls apart! aradia, you hilarious crazy girl. not the best character, but definitely close. and this panel plus this do give me a pretty good idea of what kind of facial features she should have.

(probably why i'm drawing homestuck characters of all things after years of no fanart at all, actually. all the other fandoms i currently like are live action and this being a comic largely removes the danger of not being able to make someone look quite the way they should. perfectionism, woo)

(also haha look, a post that the time aspect icon is actually 100% relevant to)

gamzee makara

(the most important character in homestuck fondly regards the miracle of a new beginning.)

let's not pretend that anybody actually has any idea how the hell gamzee's hair works. quite possibly the answer is "it doesn't, that's the whole problem".

also fuck, this is going to end up making me look like one of those act 5 only fans, isn't it. all because i like drawing troll horns. what a cruel fate.

aaah seeing how the arm muscles relate to the clavicle laid out like this just made everything so much better! suddenly the way raised arms look and are drawn makes sense!

ugh, so difficult to find reference pictures of heads from different angles that aren't anime shit.

on a related note, i tried to draw the last set of anime-esque proportions i used on a regular basis using proper face drawing techniques and found there's actually almost no difference. the eyes are a bit larger, the outlines somewhat smoother, the chin area a bit shorter in relation to the rest of the face (which i'm pretty sure is actually the case in children), but the same basic outline is there. pretty sure this kind of thing is why the usual advice goes to learn how to draw realistically before stylising things. and probably also because of all the people who pretend that "personal style" is an excuse for drawings that are just plain wrong.

(i found this in the end. looks good to me.)

(EDIT: also this, amazing but huuuge. i resized it to 25% and it's still plenty large enough for me...)

noses are so weird to draw.

way back in grade school, some kids made fun of me for drawing noses with visible nostrils because they thought they looked like pigs' snouts. i wonder if any of them ever attempted to draw realistic faces later on and realised how stupid they were.

you know what though, considering how much i seem to love drawing fairly angular faces, i'll probably end up drawing nine without even meaning to some day...

and hey that method for painting hair i talked about also still works. it's not nearly as complicated as it looks, all done using different settings of the retouch tool. as you can probably tell, i only did the auburn one from scratch, then just fiddled with hue, contrast and saturation. adding seperate strands and stuff like that would probably a bit trickier, i never had to because the last time i coloured like this i still drew anime style (ugh), but you'd probably just have to texture and shade them independently...
