so i'm reading the recently released novelisation of the pirate planet, and it seems like the author actually realised that it makes no fucking sense for romana to believe that the president of gallifrey sent her on the mission to help retrieve the pieces of the key to time. because the president of gallifrey, as of the serial directly before the first one she appeared in, was the doctor! the way this version of the story is telling it, romana absolutely did know who the doctor was, for that precise reason, which means the part about who sent her on that mission must be different now. i'm pretty pleased with this. though she didn't seem nearly as baffled with the idea that he managed to get himself elected president as i would've expected. i guess maybe it's just not actually all that important a position?

to summarise the summary: anyone who is capable of getting themselves made president should on no account be allowed to do the job

these new novelisations are generally really good. you should read them. as of now it seems like they're just going for the serials written by douglas adams, which never had official novelisations before this point, but i sure hope we'll get more. the quality of the old target novelisations is really... variable.
